Leaking Water Heater? Phones Answered 24/7.
First: turn the cold-water valve on top of the tank clockwise. Steps below ↓
Do This Right Now While You Wait
If your water heater is actively leaking, take these steps immediately to limit damage before our plumber arrives:
1. Shut off the cold water supply — The shutoff valve is on the cold water inlet pipe
at the top of the tank. Turn it clockwise to stop water feeding the leak.
2. Cut the power or gas — For electric heaters, flip the breaker. For gas, turn the
gas valve to the “pilot” position or off entirely.
3. Contain the water — Place towels or a bucket around the base. If water is near
electrical outlets or flooring, move what you can.
4. Call us — (623) 240-9892. Our phones are answered 24/7. For true emergencies we dispatch a technician between 6 AM and 7 PM.
Do not attempt to drain the tank or remove components yourself — a water heater under pressure can be dangerous. Let a Delta plumber handle it.
A leaking water heater won’t fix itself — and every hour it sits, the risk of water damage grows. Delta Home Services offers same-day response on repairs, including leaking water heaters, throughout Phoenix. Our Delta plumbers arrive, diagnose the source of the leak, and tell you honestly whether it’s a repairable fitting or a tank that needs to go.

Frequently Asked Questions — Leaking Water Heater Phoenix
Why is my water heater leaking from the bottom?
Leaks from the bottom of a tank usually indicate internal corrosion and a failing tank — this typically means replacement is needed. However, it could also be a loose drain valve, which is repairable. Our plumber will distinguish between the two and tell you honestly which applies to your unit.
Why is my water heater leaking from the top?
Top leaks are usually from inlet/outlet connections, a faulty temperature and pressure (T&P) relief valve, or a loose pipe fitting. These are generally repairable without replacing the unit. However, a T&P valve that’s actively discharging can indicate dangerous pressure buildup — shut off your water heater and call us immediately if this occurs.
Is a leaking water heater an emergency?
It depends on severity. A drip from a loose fitting is urgent but not dangerous. A large leak, ruptured tank, or actively discharging T&P valve is an emergency — shut off the cold water supply to the heater and the gas or electricity, then call (623) 240-9892 immediately. Delaying can cause significant water damage.
Can a leaking water heater be repaired or does it need to be replaced?
Leaks from valves, fittings, and connections are typically repairable. Leaks from a corroded tank or cracked tank body require replacement — there is no durable fix for a failed tank. We’ll assess your unit honestly and only recommend replacement when it’s genuinely necessary.
How quickly can you respond to a leaking water heater in Phoenix?
Our phones are answered 24/7. For true emergencies we dispatch a technician between 6 AM and 7 PM. After hours, we walk you through shutting off the water by phone. If your tank has ruptured or you have active flooding, shut off the water supply first then call (623) 240-9892 immediately.
