Heating Installation & Replacement in Scottsdale, AZ
Scottsdale requires a permit for furnace work. We size the new system to your house and price it in writing first.
A new furnace or heat pump in Scottsdale involves the city as well as the equipment, because Scottsdale requires permits for work that some neighboring cities exempt. Delta Home Services has completed 6,300+ jobs in Scottsdale since 2003. We give you the price in writing before any work begins, and Delta technicians get most installs done in a single day.
Installing a New Heating System in Scottsdale: Design Criteria and Permits
Scottsdale publishes the numbers a heating system is designed around. The city’s amendments to the residential code give an outdoor winter design temperature of 37°F, an indoor winter design temperature of no more than 72°F and an elevation of 1,473 feet in their Manual J design criteria.
Furnace work needs a permit here. The city’s Home Improvement page says a Mechanical Permit is required to install, alter, reconstruct or repair any furnace, and a Plumbing Permit to install, alter or repair a gas system. So moving from a gas furnace to a heat pump, or the other way, can involve more than the mechanical permit. We’ll tell you whether a permit applies to your job.
Applications go through the city’s planning and permitting portal, Scottsdale SPUR. A like-for-like air conditioner or air handler replacement in the same location needs a Minimum Mechanical Permit as well, which matters when a heat pump replaces both. The city adds that subdivision CC&Rs may govern some items it does not regulate, so check with your homeowners association as well.

Signs You Need a New
HEATING SYSTEM IN Scottsdale
Uneven or Inadequate Heat
Rooms that never warm up, or a system that runs constantly during a cold snap, can mean the equipment is the wrong size for the house or is wearing out.
Rising Energy Costs
Heating costs that climb while your usage stays the same are a sign the system is losing efficiency.
Safety Warning Signs
A yellow flame on a gas furnace (it should be blue) needs checking, and a cracked heat exchanger is a safety concern and a reason to look at replacement.
Frequent Repairs
When repair costs keep climbing, replacement can make more financial sense. If your system is older or repairs are adding up, we look at how it’s running and its repair history, then explain your options.

Frequently Asked Questions — Heating Installation Scottsdale
How much does a new furnace or heat pump cost in Scottsdale?
It depends on the system type, your home’s size, the efficiency rating, and whether ductwork, gas or electrical changes are needed. We give you a written, all-in price before any work begins. Call (623) 240-9892 for a free estimate, or price your new system with our online tool.
Does Scottsdale require a permit to replace a furnace?
Yes. Scottsdale’s Home Improvement page says a Mechanical Permit is required to install, alter, reconstruct or repair any furnace, and that work completed without a permit is fined an amount equal to double the permit fee. We’ll tell you whether a permit applies to your job.
What winter design temperature does Scottsdale use?
37°F. It is in the Manual J design criteria of Scottsdale’s amendments to the 2021 International Residential Code, which the city lists as effective January 7, 2023. The same table gives a mean annual temperature of 71.2°F.
I’m switching from gas to a heat pump in Scottsdale. Are there extra permits?
There can be. If the heat pump needs a new or altered electrical circuit, Scottsdale lists that under work that needs a Minimum Permit, on top of the mechanical permit for the equipment. We’ll tell you whether a permit applies to your job.
What warranty comes with a new system?
Most new systems carry a 10-year manufacturer parts warranty once registered, and we register it for you. Terms vary by brand and model, and we’ll show you yours before you buy. Our work carries 1-year labor unless your proposal states otherwise, and financing is available.
