Piping, Drain & Sewer Services in Prescott, AZ
Complete plumbing solutions designed to keep your system flowing properly — from your pipes to your main sewer line.
Sewer service is not the same from town to town. In Prescott the city’s Wastewater Operations runs about 400 miles of sewer pipe, 9,161 manholes and 65 lift stations. Prescott Valley says most homes there are connected to the town’s wastewater system, which Jacobs operates for the town. Cottonwood runs its own treatment plant and about 60 miles of collection mains. Dewey-Humboldt has no sewer mains at all: its 2026 General Plan says residents use septic systems.
The houses differ as much. In the Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 American Community Survey about a third of Prescott’s housing units were built before 1980, about 1,500 of them in 1939 or earlier, while only about 7% of Prescott Valley’s were built before 1980.

Drain and Sewer Questions from Prescott Homeowners
Who is responsible for the sewer line between my house and the street in Prescott?
You are. The City of Prescott says sewer customers are responsible for maintaining their own sewer service lateral from the private property to the municipal sewer system. If our camera inspection shows the problem is in the city main, we will tell you so you can report it to the city.
Does my Prescott home need a backwater valve?
If it is connected to the city sewer, Prescott’s plumbing code says yes: all structures connected to the City sewer system must be protected by an approved backwater valve in the building drain. Structures connected before the rule must add one when additions, alterations or repairs are done. We can look at whether yours has one.
I’m in Prescott Valley, Chino Valley or Sedona. Is it different?
Somewhat. Prescott Valley’s town code makes the town responsible for the wastewater system from manhole to manhole. In Chino Valley the town’s own list shows some subdivisions on town sewer and others on septic. Sedona’s city code makes the property owner responsible for the conveyance lines and backwater valves on the property. A camera inspection shows us what you have.
My home is on a septic system. Can you clear the drains?
We clear and repair the drain lines in and under the house. The septic tank and leach field are a separate system, permitted by Yavapai County’s Environmental Services Unit; Dewey-Humboldt requires the county’s septic permit before it accepts building plans. If a backup points to the tank, we will tell you.
Do I need a permit for sewer line work in Prescott?
A replacement does. In Prescott, moving or replacing a water or sewer line is on the city’s list of work that needs a building permit, and a right-of-way permit as well when the work is in the right-of-way. Clearing a clog, hydro-jetting and camera inspections are not on that list. We’ll tell you whether your job needs a permit.
