Piping, Drain & Sewer Services in Tempe, AZ
Complete plumbing solutions designed to keep your system flowing properly — from your pipes to your main sewer line.
Tempe was largely built out before most of the East Valley started growing. Central and north Tempe date mostly to the 1950s through the 1970s, and south Tempe filled in during the 1970s and 1980s, which puts a large share of the city on cast iron drains and clay or cast iron sewer laterals that are 40 to 70 years old. About 850 Tempe homes still take city flood irrigation, and a weekly soak keeps the soil around those sewer lines wet, drawing roots toward every leaking joint. Add the rental density around the university, where drains see heavier use than a typical household, and Tempe sewer lines tend to see more root and grease trouble than newer parts of the Valley. We have completed 1,800+ plumbing and home service jobs in Tempe.

Drain and Sewer Questions from Tempe Homeowners
My Tempe home gets flood irrigation. Can that affect my sewer line?
It can. Flood irrigation keeps the soil around your sewer lateral saturated for days at a time, and roots follow that moisture to any clay or cast iron joint that is already seeping. Repeated wetting and drying can also shift the soil and open joints further. If your property is flood irrigated and the house has its original sewer line, a camera inspection every few years is a reasonable precaution, and recurring backups are a strong sign of root intrusion.
I rent out a Tempe home near ASU. How often should the sewer line be cleaned?
It depends on the pipe, not the calendar. Rentals with several occupants put more grease, wipes, and volume down the line than a typical household, and older cast iron or clay lines collect that buildup faster. Start with a camera inspection to see the condition of the line. If it is sound, clearing on a problem basis is usually enough. If it has roots, scale, or a low spot, a scheduled cleaning, often once a year, costs far less than an emergency call during a tenancy.
My older Tempe home does not seem to have a sewer cleanout. Does that matter?
It matters when something goes wrong. Many homes built before the 1970s were not given an exterior cleanout, so the only way into the sewer line is by pulling a toilet or going through a roof vent, which makes clearing a blockage slower and more expensive. Installing a two-way cleanout outside the house gives direct access to the lateral for cleaning and camera inspections, and it is often worth doing at the same time as any sewer repair.
Is it better to repair or replace an old cast iron sewer line in Tempe?
It depends on what the camera shows. A single cracked joint or one root entry point in an otherwise sound line is a good candidate for a sectional repair. Corrosion, scale, and cracking along most of the length mean the line is at the end of its life, and patching it only moves the next failure a few feet down. In that case, lining or pipe bursting can replace the line without an open trench, depending on its condition and route.
Do I need a permit for sewer line work in Tempe?
Sewer line replacement and new drain piping generally require a permit and inspection through the City of Tempe. Drain clearing, hydro-jetting, and camera inspections do not. Plumbing work is done under Delta Plumbing Services LLC (Arizona ROC 303285, R-37). We’ll tell you whether your job needs a permit.
